Cervical cancer is something we all think won’t happen to us—until it comes close. For me, smear tests used to be an afterthought, something I kept postponing because life was busy and it didn’t seem urgent. That changed when I had a smear test and the results came back showing abnormal cells. That moment shifted how I think about my health, and I want to share my experience to help other women understand just how critical these tests are.
My Wake-Up Call
When I finally had my smear test, I wasn’t expecting anything unusual. I had some nerves, like many of us do, but I never thought it would be anything serious. When I received the letter saying that abnormal cells had been found, it hit me hard. Suddenly, I was facing the reality that I could have been at risk of something much more serious.
I went through follow-up appointments and treatment, and thankfully, everything was caught early. But that period of uncertainty reminded me of how essential smear tests are, and why we can’t afford to skip them.
Why Smear Tests Are Essential
Early Detection Can Prevent Cancer One thing this experience has taught me is that early detection truly can save your life. The abnormal cells found during my smear test weren’t cancerous yet, but they could have developed into something much more dangerous if I hadn’t been screened. The thought of that is terrifying, but also empowering—because I was able to take action in time.
Not Just About Detecting Cancer I used to think smear tests were solely about finding cancer. But they also detect abnormal changes in your cervical cells, which could develop into cancer if left untreated. Thanks to my test, these abnormal cells were caught and treated early. Smear tests are about prevention as much as detection.
Peace of Mind is Priceless Finding out I had abnormal cells was a shock, but knowing I took that step to catch it early gave me peace of mind. The procedure was quick and slightly uncomfortable, but that discomfort was nothing compared to the relief of knowing I was looking after my health.
The UK Smear Test Programme: A Lifeline for Women
In the UK, women aged 25 to 64 are invited for smear tests every three to five years. It’s a simple yet life-saving programme, designed to catch abnormal changes in the cervix before they develop into cancer. According to Cancer Research UK, cervical screening prevents around 70% of cervical cancer deaths. These numbers speak for themselves.
Alongside regular screening, the HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine is now widely available to young people, helping to prevent the virus that causes most cases of cervical cancer. But even if you’ve had the vaccine, it’s crucial to keep up with regular smear tests.
Overcoming the Fears
I completely understand the anxiety many women feel about going for a smear test—I felt it too. But after going through this, I realise how important it is to push through those worries. The test is over in minutes, and healthcare professionals are there to make you feel as comfortable as possible. It could genuinely save your life, like it did for me.
Using My Platform to Raise Awareness
As someone who’s deeply involved in Taekwondo, I’m usually focused on promoting health and well being through Taekwondo. But after my personal experience with abnormal cells, I feel it’s important to use my platform to raise awareness about cervical screening. It’s not Taekwondo-related, but this message is too important to keep to myself. I want to encourage women—especially those who are busy, active, and maybe think it won’t happen to them—to make time for their health.
You wouldn’t skip training because you know how important it is to stay fit and strong. In the same way, we can’t afford to skip our health checks. Smear tests might seem like a small, uncomfortable inconvenience, but they’re one of the most important things you can do for your future.
My Message to You
If you’ve been putting off your smear test, please don’t wait. I know how easy it is to let life get in the way, or to feel scared about what the results might say. But the sooner you go, the sooner you can either get reassurance or take action, like I did.
I’m sharing my story not just for myself, but for all the women out there who might be delaying their test. Don’t wait for a wake-up call like I had—book your smear test now. Taking that step could protect your health and your future, and you’ll feel so much better for it.
Let’s look after ourselves, just like we do when we’re training or taking care of those around us. Your health matters, so make sure you prioritise it. You never know—it could be the decision that saves your life.
