Taking on the role of Chair of the Taekwondo Council UK is both an honour and a responsibility that I hold dear. Taekwondo is more than just a sport—it’s a martial art, a way of life that teaches discipline, respect, and perseverance. It’s a journey that shapes character and instils values that go far beyond the dojang (training hall). As Chair, my role is not just about governance but about promoting all forms of Taekwondo and recognising that our strength lies in our diversity.
Promoting All Forms of Taekwondo
One of the key aspects of my role is to promote and support all forms of Taekwondo, from traditional styles to Olympic competition. Whether it's the discipline of patterns, the intensity of sparring, or the self-defence techniques that lie at the heart of our practice, each aspect of Taekwondo contributes to the rich tapestry of our art. Our strength comes from embracing these differences and celebrating the variety of paths that Taekwondo offers.
Fostering a Community of Growth
At the heart of Taekwondo is the community it creates. It’s not just about individuals training alone; it’s about a collective journey where we support each other’s growth. As Chair, I am committed to fostering this sense of community, ensuring that Taekwondo practitioners, from beginners to masters, feel supported and valued. Whether it’s through providing resources for clubs, promoting events that focus on the art of Taekwondo, or simply being a voice for our members, my role is to help our community thrive.
Championing Inclusivity and Accessibility
Taekwondo is for everyone, and as Chair, I strive to make it accessible to all, regardless of age, gender, or background. It’s inspiring to see more women and underrepresented groups stepping onto the mats, not just as students but as instructors and leaders.
Upholding Standards and Safety
Ensuring that Taekwondo events and training environments uphold the highest standards of safety is a key priority. Through initiatives like Kickmark, we make sure that safety is never compromised, allowing practitioners to focus on their journey within the art. It’s about creating spaces where individuals can train confidently, knowing that their well-being is our top priority.
Looking to the Future
As Chair, I am excited about the future of Taekwondo in the UK. There is so much potential to grow our community, deepen our understanding of the art, and share its benefits with more people. My vision includes expanding access to training, supporting instructors, and promoting Taekwondo as a lifelong journey of learning and self-discovery.
A Personal Commitment
On a personal note, this role has been a journey of growth for me as well. It’s a privilege to lead and serve a community that has given me so much. Taekwondo has taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of giving back. As Chair, I am committed to honouring these lessons and ensuring that the Taekwondo Council UK continues to be a guiding light for practitioners across the country.
In essence, being Chair of the Taekwondo Council UK is not just a title—it’s a commitment to the art of Taekwondo, to its values, and to every practitioner who steps into a training hall. It’s about safeguarding a legacy that extends beyond trophies and titles, into the very fabric of who we are as martial artists. It’s a role I am proud to hold, and I look forward to continuing this journey with our incredible Taekwondo family.
